The Work from Home Renaissance! Will it end?

As COVID-19 conditions continue to rise, work from home policies has increasingly become the new norm. Many have since questioned whether or not the work-from-home renaissance will continually increase even after the pandemic is over? Or will conditions go back to "normal," where employees are required to conduct their day-to-day tasks from a designated office space?

For some companies, remote work seems to allow for better overall performance. Several have even taken the decision to remain a work-from-home type of company since the pandemic. While other companies are more determined to have an at office work experience, due to several restrictions that are brought forth by distance work policies. A statistic by Owl Lab deduced that roughly 44% of companies worldwide have not yet set work from home policies since COVID-19.

Working from Home:

For those who have adopted work-from-home policies, 77% of workforces have claimed to show more productivity. One of the most common arguments is the fact that working from home has decreased operational costs. Rent, transportation, and utility expenses have gone down for several companies since employees and managers alike have opted to work from home thus avoiding certain costs altogether.

Other benefits experienced, is the comfort of working from within one's home. Many have made it clear that working from home can also save time and energy. No longer is there a need to waste time getting dressed, or even commuting to and from work. While working offsite, it has also been noted that many enjoy the flexible hours that certain work from home policies offer, which pertain to their schedules. Whether or not one prefers to work in the morning or night, many companies are focusing not on onset time but on deadline-driven working methods.

Working from an Office Space:

On the other hand, managers and employees alike are also experiencing negative and restrictive outcomes when working from home. For instance, many are claiming that it is harder to remain focused and stay on track without the motivation that offices provide. Managers are finding offices to be great at gathering like-minded people with relatively the same goals and objectives to facilitate more progressive productivity.

Face-to-face interactions are also more convenient to have when working from the same space. All of which seem to contribute to increasing productivity levels. However, the work from home renaissance has indeed caused the rise of several online digital management solutions, there may still be a need or desire for office spaces in certain industries as well.

Blended Form of Remote Work:

Several businesses have also implemented a more blended or hybrid style of remote work. Employees are obliged to work from the office at certain times of the week or the month at a time. This helps in resolving some of the issues that are caused by remote work and its lack of face-to-face interactions. According to a study conducted by the Harvard Business Review, 73% of companies are aiming to implement a "hybrid work environment."

It is hard to say that the current state of the work environment hasn't already induced several shifts. For instance, the demand for digitization seems to be exponentially increasing as time goes on, especially since the lockdown calls for a more online presence.
